There are thousands of products all claiming to be the answer to the age old beauty problem cellulite, but the big question is do any of them work or have any been proven to actually work?

The variety of treatments including creams, jeans, tights weird and wonderful massage gadgets is huge but are the claims true or are they no more viable than the key to eternal youth.Each one carries the claim to solve a problem which blights most women.

There have been whole rainforests destroyed to write about the subject of the so called fatty deposits but more importantly their have been fortunes earned for the Multi Billion dollar cosmetic industry through these self-proclaimed remedies.

But the industry received a setback recently when the ASA in the UK labelled an advert for a cream by Estee Lauder, which costs $60 for a 200ml tube, as misleading. The ASA agreed that the advert implied Estee Lauder’s Body Performance Anti Cellulite Visible Contouring Serum worked directly on the cellulite, something that would be an impossibility.

But what is Cellulite, it is a permanent change in the fat stored under the skin and unfortunately it is inevitable for the majority of women. It is as a result of the fat cells enlarging with age, and they push through the connecting fibres, which stay the same size, giving the appearance somewhat akin to a balloon being blown up through a string vest. The bulges on the outer skin are the fat cells emerging through.

Cellulite affects a cross section of all shapes and sizes, as everyone has fat cells. Men can develop cellulite but it’s not as visible because their make-up as a male has a different body fat another factor is it is hereditary a genetic inevitability about the process but some medical experts say diet, smoking and a couch potato lifestyle add to the problem.

But no quick fix will be found in a bottle, says Dr Susan Mayou, a consultant dermatologist. “I don’t see how a cream can remove the dimples, unless it’s car body filler.

Cellulite is a genetic predisposition not helped by being overweight but there is no way of improvement, other than rupturing the fibrous bands or removing the fat, says a leading dermatologist.

She goes on to say that although tights can improve the shape of a woman’s upper thighs they don’t do anything to the cellulite, and massage is supposed to break down the fibrous bands, but again there is no hard evidence to support this claim

Other top professionals agree with these sentiments cellulite is closely linked to female sex hormones, and during puberty and pregnancy it can worsen.

The only proven method is to actually remove the fat cells using liposuction, which sucks out the fat cells, though it is a drastic step to take and in unskilled hands may well make the situation worse.

But we all when we look at our orange peel thighs want to believe the claims on the bottle that this one really does work and after all it is made by a reputable company… are we fooling ourselves?

The short answer is currently – yes!
